Its not just recently corrupt, its been this way longer than we'll ever know, we've been programed to accept things as they are, 200 years ago, there would be a revolution over taxation alone. greed breeds corruptness, politics is no exception.
if you can believe that the media would lie to you, you can read past the BS and search for the truth on your own, just be open minded and dance to your own beat and not someone elses.

Government is corrupt by engaging their country in wars so that officials will earn a lot from arms sales and reconstruction projects.

The war is an attempt to build a democratic nation state smack in the middle of our biggest problems (e.g Saudi Arabia & Iran). Sadam's games around WMD's and his own saber rattling gave us the excuse to both break his country and his neck.
Never bite the hand that arms you.
Personally I think that's like giving guns to monkeys. The outcome is anything but predictable and one is liable to get shot in the butt - but we have to try.
It's really a last chance before we throw in the towel and park an aircraft carrier on permanent station off of the coast of Israel.
As for corruption, I'm more worried about competence. In another 2+ years we're going to have to decide if we need to drop a low yield nuclear weapon on Iran. Ahmadinejad knows full well that if pushed to it Bush would do it. Do we think that the clowns we have in Congress now could make that kind of decision? Scary thought.

The government is indeed corrupt...but the bigger question is leadership:
1) to enforce the law
2) to win the war
3) to serve the people in trouble
answer...there is precious little leadership from either party today. We need a new bunch in DC.

6 million dollars per day is spent in washington by lobbyists(some for foreign governments and corporations) to influence legislation. the only thing that legally allows the influence of legislation are the american people. lobbyists should be banned. in 1968. there were 62 lobbyists in washington. today there are over 34,000. average lobbyist makes 300k per year. this is twice as much as congressmen they are buying. also, 43% of politicians in washington when they lose an election or retire from politics become lobbyists themselves. yeah i don't care for lobbyists. i don't care if they do have a good cause. some are for good, but nowhere in the constitution does it allow for lobbyists to influence legislation with money. nowhere.
look at ron paul who is running for president. he is the only person running for president that voted no on the iraq war. and they call him crazy. its all an agenda. ron paul doesn't take any money from lobbyists. he kicks them out of his office. they don't even bother with him anymore. ron paul hates the US government and the US government hates him because he exposes them.
first they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.--ghandi
ron paul for president, he is our only hope to save america

You must be very young if you just noticed the corruption in government.
The answer as to why, is because the people who make things happen are either getting rich or gaining power or both.

"Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely". Politicians have the power to impose whatever laws they wish upon the American public while exempting themselves from those laws. As long as we have that situation, we will have corrupt politicians. The war is about money. Period. bush/cheney/rove are swimming in the financial rewards of the war in Iraq. American soldiers dying in Iraq mean nothing to them. To them, the end justifys the means.

Corruption is normal in the US. You either accept it right now, or face an uphill battle the rest of your life.
