i give firm handshakes for any business or formal meetings. That assured my job application as well as have friendly relations with professors. It's a friendly form of gesture in the business field, so I would say firm and friendly are the same in that sense,

unless of course i handshake a little child...that would be the normal friendly handshake

Depends with who I shake my hand. If it's for a job interview, then i'll do a firm handshake. If it's with a normal person, a friendly handshake will do.

I notice, when people give me a handshake, most of the time, like 8 times out 10, it's firm.
so, it seems like it's only natural to give back a firm handshake.

Always Firm. I am a massage therapist and often forget I have strong hands. There is nothing worse then getting a wet noodle of a hand in a handshake though. I tend to lose respect for people that do not have a firm grip, it makes me believe they lack confidence. Just my opinion but I have heard a lot of people say the same thing.

Depends on their age and my respect for them, and somewhat sex.
I'll give very firm, almost crushing handshakes to old guys, because they get a better impression of me.
I'll give softer handshakes to guests, particularly ones with thier dates.
I'll usually give gentle, but decisive handshakes. If they don't get the message far enough, have an extra nod, wink, or other signal.
