The Pearl Earring didn't seem to me so much about the power of love or manipulation so much as it was a nice insight into the "lifting of ignorance." While the main character knows little of life going into the book, she finishes a stronger, wiser and more knowledgeable person.

I'd guess I'd say the book is a statement of personal growth, and how a person can overcome large obstacles like class, poverty, etc. and find an inner power.
