The other two answers make a lot of assumptions about
what you know and don't know. I would assume that they haven't really helped you. Therefore, a little
instructional "cause & reason" will probably help you a lot more.

Current State Cause/Reason
2y + 5 = -y-4 This is the defined problem
2y + 5 - 5 = -y -4 -5 What you do to one side
of the equation you must
do to the other side.
2y = - y - 9 Simplified on both sides,
NOW you can isolate
and solve for the variable y
2y + y = - y -9 + y Once again - what you do to
one side of the equation,
you must do to the other side.
3y = - 9 Simplified again on both
sides so now you solve for
the variable y.
3y / 3 = -9 / 3 Once again - what you do to
one side of the equation,
you must do to the other side.
y = -3 Your Answer.

First off, you want to get the unknowns on the same side of the = sign. You can doo prety much what you like to the equation to do this, as long as you do it to both sides.
So add +y on each side

2y+5= -y-4
becomes
2y+5+y = -y-4+y
and simplifying
3y+5 = -4
Now, we need to move the 5
3y+5-5 = -4-5
3y = -9

Now, we can divide both sides by 3 and we get
y = -3

To check
2(-3)+5= -(-3)-4
-6+5 = 3-4
-1 = -1

Solve for Y.
2y +y = -4 -5
3y = -9
y= -3

You see, you can subtract or add a single item from both sides of the "=" sign to isolate the unknown (in this case "y"). Then divide both sides by 3.

Do a quick internet search for algebra. There should be a few sites which can help you understand it- at least to stay ahead of your child for a little while longer.

2 y + 5 = - y - 4
+y +y
3y + 5 = -4
-5 -5
3y = -9
÷3 ÷3
y = -3

oh and theres 2 of each numbers like "(+y), meaning they're added to both sides of the equations. The equal sign is what seperate each side of the equation."

they usually let you find the unknowns there.. namely y..
just try combining like terms..

first, group together the like terms.. the whole numbers on one side and the variables on the other..

=> 2y + 5 = - y - 4
=> 2y + y = -5 - 4

then, combine them to simplify which will yield...

=> 3y = -9

to isolate y on one side, simply divide both sides with 3..

=> (1/3) 3y = -9 (1/3)
=> y = -3

There you go.. the answer is y = -3
