Is there another equation somewhere? To solve for both variables, we'll need another equation.

Unless this is simply an equation for a line?

-x+9y=36
what i did was get rid of the -x by adding it on both sides. that gives you:
9y=36+x
then i divided both sides by 9.
final answer:

y=4+x/9

to find x, this is what i did:
subtract 4 on both sides to cancel it out.
now it's:
y-4=x/9
to get rid of the 9 on the right side, multiply x/9 by 9/1; remember to multiply the left side my 9/1 too, which gives you 9(y-4). distributive property. that gives you 9y-36 on the left side.

right side:
x/9*9/1 (easier if you write it down on paper.)
what's left is just x since the 9's cancel out.

so the final answer is x=9y-36.

1. -x+9y=36
2. 9y=36-x
3. 9y=36 / -1
4. -9y=-36
5. -36 / -9=4
6. y=4 x=-1

-x+9y=36
9Y=36+X
Y=(36+x)/9
and
if y=(36+x)/9 then subtitute y in the equ.
-x+9(36+x)/9=36
then the equ.becomes this when 9 cancels the 9 outside the equ
-x+(36+x)=36
then multiply out to remove the bracket
-x+36+x=36
then x =0 and y=(36+x)/9
