The 'seed' of our personality is our temperament...there are about 5 of them in any good developmental psych. text.

Nature, Nurture (or lack of) and the Responses of the self all mix together to develop the foundation for the personality.

Now, in Adlerian personality theory and therapy practice; the first memory is seen as very important; as IT is what was remembered. If the first memory is provided in a trusting environment, with a trained therapist, a great deal of interpretation of current day responses and feelings can be delved into and learned from.

And, as posted, the first memory as in the child of 5 having mother die; can contaminate her perceptions of 'mother figures' for a long time. And it can't be argued or reasoned with, so the young person who is staying silent about hassles with her mother is being quite wise.

I hope this gets you digging deeper. A Adler had much to offer psychology and should not be forgotton.

Yes it shapes who you are and how you see things. For example my best friend's first memory is of her mother dying when she was 5. My mom and I fight sometimes and she can never see any wrong in what my mom does. I try not to discuss anything negative with her about my mom.

No. Your first memory itself is just a memory. It's how you interpret that memory that shapes your personality.
