I've been visiting my parents these next few weeks, and I was wondering why their internet keeps craping out. It's cable from cebridge, broadband, not that fast but its about 256kb download and upload. What has been bothering me though, recently, is the modem works great for a few minutes, then craps out and goes INCREDIBLY SLOW... about dial-up speed. It then goes back to normal and repeats the process. I was just wondering if the problem would be the modem or the ISP, doubtful its the OS. It didnt do this last time i was here, which was about a year ago, they still have the same modem. Last year they called me and asked, they had an old 2002 Windows XP system, I figured they needed a computer upgrade. They got a shiny new Dell Dimension E520. I came over to set it up for them and visit them of course. The problem still persists. Is it the ISP? Is it the modem? Do I need to call the ISP and have them replace the modem? I'd rather consult the people here, rather than call. Please help.

There is no router involved. I tried unplugging it for even 10 minutes... it worked fine for exactly 10 minutes, then it started crapping out again :(. I'd call my ISP but its 10:00PM here.

Well on broadband connection the answer I had for a support person of my ISP ,was that even I pay for 256kb, the speed will vary from 0 to 256 depends from the traffic.
When I asked why I pay for 256 when I have dial-up speeds, could rather stay to dial-up, sillence was the answer.
So I figured that this wasn't a serious answer and I dig a little deeper.
I found two things that usually go wrong.

A) traffic share to many people and ISP's can't handle this traffic cause they allowed more users to sign in thatn their badwidth allow.

b) Modem need to reset.
To reset modem can use user manual.

But also you can call support, so they can test your line and tell you if something else is wrong, or to give you step by step help on how to reset the modem.

If you are able to access the internet directly using the ADSL modem of the provider you simply have to reset the router to factory settings and then reconfigure it. For router reset some hidden key must be somewhere on the router which in most cases has to be pressed for 10 seconds using a needle or something similar.. The configuration page of the routers is accessible without internet connection. It only looks like a web page. It is stored locally in the router's own memory. Some routers do not accept configuration by wireless connection. Some others cannot connect directly to a computer for the set up if Windows versions higher than Windows XP is used. The best is connecting it by a cable to one computer only, finding and accessing the configuration, setting it up and then connecting all others. If that all is not possible why not discard the crook and by a US $ 100.- brand new super router with state of the art technology. With ten people depending from it everyone had to invest US $ 10.-..ISPs are the most wrong of all wrong ones to ask for router problems. Every death of a router makes them look more happily. The more persons are connected to one single access point the more bandwidth problems they will get. Only routers can cause those problems. If they would make the laws routers were prohibited completely.

If there is a router conected between the modem and the computer, remove it and connect the computer directly to the modem.

If this does not fix the problem or there is no router read on.

Call the ISP, your parents are paying for the service. have them do some tests. Sometimes they can determine whether or not it is the modem.

Do they have a good anti virus, spyware, adware application installed and kept up to date.

If not get one installed, update it and run a manual scan.

Good Luck

I will bet it's spyware. There is a tone of good quality spyware software out there that you can download and use for free. You may also want to make sure their virus software is up to date and run a complete system scan to look for a trojan.
