They do design mats specifically for laser mice, howerever any old mat will work, However me and my dad don't even use a mouse pad with our laser mouse, and it still works awesomely.
A mouse pad would be better though because sometimes little strands of hair or food particles or dust on your desk can screw up the sensitivity. It will be noticeable when something is in the way of the laser and is messing with its sensitivity.

I have a laser mouse and I find they don`t work well on shiny surfaces. The mouse mat I use is useless the right way up! so I turn it over and use the foamy side!lol, works fine that way.

you can use any mouse mat but you can now get laser mates which have a graph on them which the laser finds it easy to track
movement.

The whole point of lazer mice is that they can be used on ANY FLAT SURFACE, be it your arm or a table. No mice mats are required, unless you want to protect your desk, then use one which is easy to move the mouse on, eg a glossy one.

Don't need mat (or mousepad) for laser mice. You can use it on any flat surface. I use mine on the computer table, no pads.

you dont need any mat at all as long as the surface isnt too reflective or too perfect. (Imperfections are good for reading).
Mouse pads nowdays are more for personalization an self expression.

You can use any mouse mat. I don't normally bother with one at all.
