Adding ram will help. Do not add ram that is slower than whats in it now as your memory only runs at the speed of the slowest ram. If the ram you have in it now is slow and you add faster ram the new ram will run at the slower speed of the ram you have in it now so you should also replace the ram in your machine now with the faster ram. Use this as a tool, use click "scan my system"

It will help, but the more ram the better, roughly for xp 1.5-1GB works but 768 is good as well. In our upstairs computer we have 768 mb and it is fast compared what it used to be. 256 mb ram is horribly slow. Also download AdAware from lavasoft and use it to scan for spyware that may have come with the photo and cirus control programs (unlikely but possible). Lastly defragment your Hard Disk Drive this will help speed up your computer as well.

you SHOULD add more ramm, there is no such thing as too much. If you do add ramm, check first if it is DDR2, if so, add it in matched pairs to put the system into high speed mode. If you dont have ddr2, just add memory that has the same speed or more. You can find memory configurators @ crucial or kingston.
BUT you should only have ONE reputable antivirus you should only have no moer than two antispyware. Get rid of greyware/malware in add/remove programs like all the free programs, they usually have spyware bundled within them. Get rid of AOell, limewire, frost bearshare and their ilk. Go to msconfig and remove items from startup. Get a real vid card instead of your integrated one, that will free up dozens of Megs of ramm. Right click my computer/advanced/performance and uncheck anything that says fade, slide or animate. Do a defrag. Clear history and temp files.

Adding memory is absolutely help to speed your computer and also try to do disk clean up to clean unused files or uninstall some programs which you are no longer use. It can help you to save some space on your hard drive. If adding some memory 's still not help, try to get portable hard drive and transfer those big file to this drive (esp. photos). It will help a lots to boot up your speed.

Yeah I agree with everyone, adding new memory to your computer will make things faster. Also if you are able to add more memory to your computer that helps a lot as well as you can run three times as many programs.

Its definitely not a waste of money, i just upgraded from 1gb to 3gb and noticed a huge difference, to remove programs at start up type MSCONFIG into the run application and select STARTUP, from there you can remove programs that you don't want to run when you start windows, hope this helps

Yes adding memory to your system speeds it up. You can also remove unnecessary programmes from the start up folder. This will enable the computer to boot faster.
