i am not a really big fan, but the highest # i can remember seeing was 72- carlton fisk IIRC. is there a rule not allowing #'s to be in the 80's or 90's?

also, if a team retires enough uniform #'s, like the yankees have about 15 retired. a day will eventually come when there are so many retired numbers, there is not enough for the team. what will they do?

There's no rule against it. There's Mitch Williams' 99, and Turk Wendell also wore #99 for a while with the New York Mets. Loved that guy, what a character. As for other numbers higher than 72, there have been many. Barry Zito wears #75 with the San Francisco Giants right now.

I have no idea what teams will do when they retire too many numbers. That could get weird. The lead "0" could be a possibility, such as the "09" that Benito Santiago once wore so that his "9" wouldn't be covered by the strap of his chest protector.

Actually, there is NOTHING in the Official Baseball Rules that stipulates that a number be only one or two digits. Have a look yourself, the link is a little farther down. They just don't say anything at all about how many digits the number can have. Theoretically, a uniform number can be as big as whatever fits on the back, as long as they fit the rule of minimum six inches. That one could open a can of worms one of these days! Perhaps a Jackie Robinson fan will wear "4242" to get around the retired #42, or maybe you'll see a player wear his phone number, the possibilities are endless.

But TO DATE, #99 is the highest that there's been so far, unless someone like Bill Veeck had someone wear a three-digit number in one of his crazy promotional events, like when he had Eddie Gaedel wear "1/8"...

99 is the highest possible number a player can wear.

The lowest would be 0.

Can you imanging wearing 0?

The fans would be chanting '' Lets go 0!''

it goes to 99. No triple digits, no position-set numbers (like you see in the NFL). Lots of freedom, except for retired numbers and such.

eric gagne has #83 for the red sox, i think 99 could be the highest.

they would probably go to the 01's, 02's, 03's like the busch series has.

well right now in the MLB, Eric Gagne has #83, so #'s in the 80's and 90's are allowed.
