Depends on what type of character you're playing - I usually send in my non-spell casting characters (Barbarian, Paladin, Assassin) right in close to attack with the strongest weapon I have...
Spellcasters and Archers should use a "hit and run" approach - firing spells/arrows at him, and then running away to avoid being counter-attacked.
If you have any summon spells (or hired help) - send them in first, and then use which ever strategy above applies to finish the job...

it depends on your character but try to use spells on him if you can. I have an assasin and shes hardcore so it was easy for me!
