I really want it to be a system update, because if a updated wii system comes out, that will suck. I hated when the new version of the ds comes out (lite). So will dvd playback be a system update, and is there going to be a new version of the system?

Although it is certainly possible, it is hard to predict what Nintendo will do. There have been so many revisions of Game Boys and now the DS to add functionality. However, there has never been a Nintendo system as updatable as the Wii, so this is new territory.

The drive in the Wii is a custom LG DVD drive, and is still capable of reading from DVD discs, there is just no software on the Wii to do the reading. Nintendo did this to cut costs on software and MPEG2 licensing, really. If they did want to, they could release it as a firmware update, but they'd have to eat the licensing costs for every console that downloads it. That leads me to believe that they will just release a "new" version that has the software built-in. But I will be hoping otherwise.

DVD playback on the Wii would require a system and hardware update. So...probably it won't happen. There will be a new system, I doubt anytime soon though, because the one right now sells so well that it would be a bad move for Nintendo to make.

It will likely be done through a system update, I believe some illegal mod chips allow playing of DVDs and they arent ecactly what you would call a major hardware change, it will most likely be done through an additional channel which will be a DVD playing application

Nintendo has announced to release a DVD-Video version of the Wii. There has been no word on if older consoles are able to get this hardware though.

idk because it could be possible like the other guy said and they will make a channel but i read on their website that they dont want people too feel cheated so they will probably make a new type of hardware that will allow dvd playback ~this is juss an opinion of a way to not make people not feel cheated because of not having dvd playback support

Very doubtful that it will be an update, most probably be either an add on to purchase or a newer model.
