I have Windows Vista Home Premium, with an Intel Pentium dual processor T2130 @1.83GHz 533 Mhz FSB. I do not do anything high end on this laptop an have a 160GB hard drive on this lap top on a Toshiba P205-S6307. I have the capacity to take it to 4 GB, but i don't feel it would be worth the money to go that far out for what I am using this unit for at all.

Rule of thumb for all RAM. Get as much as you possibly can afford. At least 2GB for Vista in my opinion.

Vista is a resource intensive system but if you don't use your computer for high end gaming or graphics software, 1GB should suffice. However if you start experiencing problems and systemn crashes, you should look into adding another GB.

You can see if your computer can handle more RAM by going to Crucial.com and running a scan.

It's important to note that everything takes RAM. Not only security products (such as active anti-spyware, anti-virus and firewall) eat up memory but your operating system, active browser windows, running applications (such as Word, Gaming, Messenger, Photoshop, etc) and malware all compete for system resources.

If your not running Vista s' Aero Glass feature then you have ample ram to run other programs and games. If you prefer to use the aero glass feature then your ram is allready maxed out and upgrading to 2gigs will be necessary to avoid stalls and crashes. Even Microsoft will advise 2 gigs of ram .Vista needs 512mb and aero needs 512mb and wants more. If you want to keep your rig as is just uninstall the aero glass feature

1GB will cut it for vista home premium, but you should have at least 2GB to run it well. If you're not doing anything terribly intensive, you don't need a whole buttload of RAM. 768MB didn't cut it when I was using Vista RC1, 1GB isn't a whole lot more.
