1) Make sure you've washed & dried the jeans a couple of times so they've shrunk as much as they are going to shrink.

2) Wear the kind of shoes you plan to wear w/ the jeans when you go to the tailor or seamstress. The person will try different lengths to see what you want. When you're satisfied, the person will pin it to mark it.

3) Be sure that they can finish the hem so it looks like the original hem's stitching.

mkay..i just had this done. so basically you go in and tell them that your jeans are too long and then you put them on for the tailor and he will decide how long your jeans should be. he will then ask you what types of shoes you wear with them so that he may make them a little longer for those shoes. and then basically you hand him the jeans and you can either get the bottom border on your jeans or off...get them off because then they look like they have never been tailored. then he gives you the bill and when you can pick them up and then you go back and pay him and voila! you got yourself a new pair of jeans.

Do it at home. Put on the jeans, and fold them where you would like them to end. Put a pin/needle/whatever, to hold the fold in place. Go to the alteration place, and tell them that you cuffed the pants where you would like them hemmed.

The shop I go to has a dressing booth.
I put the item on and they pin it and mark it where I want it hemmed.
Or measure the inseam of a pair with the right length and just tell them the measurement.
Inseam is from the crotch seam to the end of the cuff.

You should take the shoes that you are most likely to wear the jeans with and put them on so that they can accurately measure the length. If you don't do this, you could end up with a poor fit.
