Let's try a hypothetical question: Say we knew each other, and I was willing to buy as many years of your life you are willing to spare at $1,000,000 a year. The catch is you don't know if I will kill you to take the years or if I have "some other arrangement" in mind. I have assured you, though, it will be years from the end of your life if I did intend to take those years through death (for the sake of argument, I can figure out how long you will live).

Would you take me up on the offer and why, and how many years would you sell?

I'd sell you one and leave it for my kids to have a life with.

I would sell you the last 10 years of my life for 10 million dollars. The life expectancy for my generation is roughly 80 years. Those last ten years will likely be characterized by great mental and physical decline. I've know people who who suffering from dementia and debilitating physical ailments in the years leading up to there death. I really wouldn't want to live like that anyway. And 10 million dollar would make the next 40 or so years of my life much better. I could do all do all the things I always wanted and really live instead of just working to keep my head above water.

And just in case you came to murder me to collect on our bet, I'd made sure a purchased a cache of weapons before then.

I wouldn't sell 30 seconds of my life because that 30 seconds could be the difference between saying to my family I love you one last time or killing over dead without so much as a goodbye. Every moment is precious to me.

No. Life is short enough. I wouldn't give anyone that kind of control or power.
