Well, mostly because that's where my friends are. I suppose also because that's where questions of practical ethics, world view, and so, appear - and that's what has interested me all my life. Travel well with Lao tzu. But, as a wise feller told me when I was very young - never forget there are other paths.

I came to the Philosophy category as an interested new member of Yahoo answers. My reasons for choosing Philosophy are because I am truly interested in Philosophy in general; ancient philosophers in particular and; since my career is somewhat insular; I thought it would give me a chance to interact with other people of like ideas and minds; share opinions and perhaps learn new concepts.
I viewed some of the previous answers and I must say, I am a bit taken aback as to why some people have bothered to answer or respond at all.
Perhaps the questions should be addressed to the topic of who is Lao Tzu? Or, What is the meaning of Philosophy? Lao Tzu was considered an 'Old Master' revered as a saint or prophet by the Chinese. He may not have written the Tao alone; scholars believe that others contributed to the teachings of the Tao but Taoism is considered a "religico-philosophical tradition"(encyclopedia Britannica) that has endured for over 2000 years by the Chinese and, of course by others the world over.
Taoism, to me is a way of correct living-with joy and acceptance; a path to good morals and ethics--
I may not have not delved deeply into the teachings of the
Tao Che Ching, or the other teachings that make up the Tao; but like any 'lover of wisdom"; i.e., 'philosophia'; I am open enough to appreciate and respect all ancient teachings and philosophies which whether we realize it or not; still have impact, import and influences in all our lives to this very day.
Of course, there are many, many forms and types of Philosophies both ancient and modern--my favorite would have to be the teachings of the ancient masters and of course
the natural philosophies.
I am sorry that some of the answers I have read previously did nothing to enlighten me of responders' higher ideals or intellect; perhaps we could have more discussions of different philosophers and the origins of Philosophy or the purpose of Philosophy in order to better educate-whether informally or socially, or for the more serious participants-- those that are missing enrichment in their lives.

Lao tzu more on ying yang understanding, if i'm not wrong, so called dao de is link to Ru Xue...and ru jia shi xiang is firm and positive. Well, they called "positive" because it is their rules and regulation.....if for LAO TZU, his standard is much higher....very flexible and no fix formula....he see things in round, not square.
if you put two things at the time, you will get confused.....because their saying very complicated and not the same....if you do not have any china history knowledge, you will have hard time to catch up and understand it!!!!!
out of ten chinese people, probably one heard of lao tzu, but all heard of kong zhi!!!! yet out of ten, mostly do not know what kong zhi trying to tell...if they do not understand MR.KONG, how do they know about MR.LAO?

Firstly, philosophy is my interest. I find challenging thoughts in this category. It enriches my knowledge in a variety of topics and issues. I learn many ideas and opinions from people with sensible answers. I could also catch how good people here draw interesting questions. It is a mental activity for me.

Master what you choose to master and appreciate that all accomplishments are beginnings.
I chose to get into philosohy because having none didn't work. Nichiren Buddhism as taught ny SGI-USA fills the bill for me except for their use use religious words.

to kill time.
additional details.
I don't think you can learn about Lao tzu in any great depth here. most ppl are just here to kill time or socialize in a "not so professional way"...just in case you haven't already noticed. :-)
I have read lao tzu but i don't feel there is anything that is 'particularly fantastic' about the philosophy. just my opinion.
