In Houston, Texas in a 2,100 square foot house...

Electric $300 during the summer, $100 in the winter
Gas $30 in the summer, $50 in the winter
Water $20 to $30
Phone and Internet $80
Cable $80
Cell phone $50
Alarm monitoring $19.99


Don't forget renters or home owners insurance.

I'm in CA so if you live somewhere else it may be a little different. My apartment is roughly 1,000 square feet and there are 3 people that live here.
So, for.....
PG&E is $100-150/mo (That's gas, heat, A/C, and electricity)
Water is $35/mo
Garbage is $20/mo
Phone and Internet is $75/mo

But, if you have a roomate then you can split everything. You shouldn't spend more than 50% of your monthly gross income on living expenses if you want to have money for entertainment and things like a car and food. Good luck, it's a big step!!!

Rent - $1100 (water included) roughly 1200 SF 2BR
Phone & internet - $90
Electric - $100
Oil Heat - avgs $50 - $75 month
Gas (cooking and hot water) - $50
