Actually the event that you are thinking of took place on August 27th, 2003. Sorry.
Yes, Mars did past within 34.65M miles of the Earth. Yes, Mars has not been that close to Earth since before the last Ice Age. Yes, Mars won't get that close to the Earth again until 2287. No, Mars did not look like the full moon. It did; however, look like Venus with the only difference was that Mars is red and Vesus is silver.
You can spot Mars in the Eastern Morning Sky before sunrise in the constellation Taurus.

i heard thast just a rumor. and they said last year mars was the closet it would be in a long time.
i read that the mars could never be that close.

Bummer, bummer! I just sent emails telling my friends about it and now I read in this that it is a hoax. Oh well I will just email them back. Thanks anyway. I sure wish I had of seen it!
