im looking for a comedy or mecha anime

A comedy or a mecha? Full Metal Panic! is both a comedy and a mecha. Plus it is one of my favorite series out of the many that I have seen.
The first season is hard to find in stores and is quite expensive, so your best bet would be ebay.
However, if you go right to the second season (Full Metal Panic Fumoffu) you can find the entire season at a store like Best Buy for ~$40. It is alright to skip straight into the second season because it doesn't deal anything at all with the main plot and is instead a humorous break in between the first and third seasons.
I know plenty of people who haven't seen either the first or third season but loved Fumoffu. My cousin, for example, just recently borrowed the box set for Fumoffu without having seen the others and absolutely loved it.

Just so you don't accidentally buy something you don't want out of Kono_Yaro extensive list, the following are neither mecha nor comedies (*almost all shows have humor, but these aren't known for their comedic value):

For a mecha... you should watch Gurren Lagann. They're up to episode 20 subbed now. It's also funny at points but awesome none the less.

Just because you really enjoy it doesn't mean you're an otaku. It's like any other hobby: as you get more and more into it, you start getting more involved, but it doesn't mean you're an addict or an otaku. Trust me, you're not an otaku/ weaboo yet: when it gets to the point that you start cosplaying and pretending to be a character, then we'll talk. But for now, your interest in anime is fine. In fact, it's about equal to mine, and I'm still normal!

Full Metal Panic! and Full Metal Panic?Fumoffu are fantastic Mech and Comedy.
Full Metal Panic! is more Mech and Action but there is plenty of Comedy/Romance too.
Fumoffu is more Comedy/Romance but it is HILARIOUS!
It's my favourite... I saw one ep of fumoffu on Anime-OnDemand and I could not wait for them to show the whole series... So I went out and bought it... then I bought the first series right after...
It's not hard to find either series but you might have to ask you comic store to order it for you...
