The control buttons are working? If you push the stop or clear button does it shut off? If not, the control buttons are not working. They could be stuck with crud or just plain broke. Take it to an appliance repair shop for an estimate or just buy a new one.

Take a wet washrag and clean off the catch. If that does not help, buy a new one. They are on sale at WalMart.....GE for around $60. You will LOVE the new microwaves. Lots of nice features. Make sure it comes with a turn table so you will no longer have to turn food.

By the way, microwaves don't last long. I cook daily with microwaves and I can get about three years out of them.

had trouble with mine it's years old (20?) wouldn't work until you slammed door few times then after a while slamming didn't work so shutting and pulling gently on handle worked now shutting gently twice works so its a matter of testing what works or get a new one but you do get used to it and when you work out the problem it's fine. New types are more powerful and you may need to look up instructions for a while but they are more user friendly and have more controls for auto cooking which is good. So good luck clean and fiddle or go with the new !

It is possible that the start button or the start circuit is always on. You didn't mention if it has a mechanical timer or not. If it is, then it is also possible that the contacts have welded closed and always turns the microwave on.

With the cost of microwaves so cheap, I'd throw it out and get a new one.

Check the contact point where the door hits on and see if something is stuck in there. Try cleaning the buttons and the contact point to see if that helps. Try unplugging it and then plug it back in again (sort of like rebooting a computer)
