Dumbledore gave it to him, but he actually inherited it from his father. See Dumbledore asked James if he could borrow it in order to examine the cloak and he had it in his possession the night Voldemort tried killing Harry. Ten years later he gave it to it's rightful owner.

Way back when James (Harry's dad) was still alive, Dumbledore borrowed his (James') personal invisibility cloak, and James wound up dying before he (Dumbledore) had the chance to return it. Dumbledore kept it all those years, until Christmas Harry's first year, he wrapped it up and left it under the tree with the unsigned note, finally returning it to it's rightful owner. We find out in later books that the handwriting on the note matched Dumbledore's handwriting, and eventually, Dumbledore expressly tells Harry that it was him who gave him that Christmas present all those years ago. Sorry. I'm a bit of a Harry Potter freak. Heh. **EDIT** Miss ATK is absolutely brilliant. Technically, the house-elves gave Harry the cloak.

Dumbledore gave Harry the cloak, but the cloak belonged to James Potter, Harry's father.

Yup. It was Dumbledore. The letter that came with it said something about how "his father left this with me". That was because before James died, Dumbledore had his invisibility cloak. It was then passed down to Harry.
