i'm one of those people. for six years i abused alcohol, oxycontin, cocaine, and experimented with IV drugs. got 3 dui's in less than a year, totalled 3 brand new cars, dropped out of college, and ended up in jail. which was the best thing thats ever happened to me. i got out, went to rehab, and i've been clean and sober 16 months now. i've got a beautiful healthy daughter and a wonderful partner. i am proof that good things happen when you make good choices. i'm not proud of my past but its made me grateful to be clean, sober, and alive today.

Unfortunately, I have known quite a few. - I met most of them through my kid's dad, who is now an ex.
First would be my kid's dad's brother. Actually, I'm not really sure if it's the drugs' fault or if he's just a mess-up.
I once knew a man named Mike. He was so sweet :) At least, he was sweet to me. But he admitted to me one day that his life was a mess because of his addiction. The only joy he had in his life was when he saw a child smile (He was a carnival worker). Other than those occasions when he saw a little face light up - the only thing worth getting out of bed and going to work for was his drugs. Mike died October 31, 2001. I learned of his death just hours before learning of the little life growing inside of me - I cried so hard that night. Missed my friend, wished I could tell him about the baby I was blessed with.
Kooter: Another carnie. He was... an ok guy. But he couldn't get over his drugs. He wasted a lot of money. Then he wasted a lot of time in jail when he got desperate enough to purchase from an undercover cop. He wasn't out too long before he died from drug-related health problems.
Bryan. This one was a neighbor of mine. He could have had a lot going for him. He had great parents, a wonderful wife, a beautiful daughter, and a pretty darn nice dog. He also had a good paying job, a nice truck, and my dream house. He drove all of these things out of his life with the mood swings that came from his party-loving nature.
My cousin. Yep, he could have had a lot going for him too. Even after the wreck that broke his back and left him in a wheel chair, my family was there to help him succeed in life. But, he chose the wrong way. He turned into a real jerk and I will never look at him the same. I'm not sure if he ever got out of jail that last time - don't really care after the way he treated me last time we were alone together.
There are more, but those are the ones that have had the largest impact in my life.

I've lost so many friends and loved ones to drugs. I almost lost my life too... I cleaned up, because I believe that we were put here for a reason even if I'm not sure what that reason is... I realize that there are so many great things to focus on instead and that life is a blessing. It's what you make it. I look back now and wish that I didn't waste my youth on such mindless behavior... I profoundly miss my friends everyday and think what a waste! We could still be partying today if not for our stupidity.

You are so right. I guess that's one reason it bothers me so much when I see answers that joke around with drug use. It's really not a laughing matter.
