I recently purchased my first boat, a 1989 Reinell 179k. It is an I/O with a Ford 302V8. The boat appeared to be in excellent shape with 400 hours on it and I am the 3rd owner. Everything was fne on the first outing and every outing since (I have had it out 4 times) the boat occasionally lifts up high and to the right, causing a scare for all aboard. This has not happened under hard acceleration and appears to have nothing to do with the water conditions. When this happens I let completely off of the throttle and let the boat settle back down into the water. When I let off the throttle I do not hear the hull slapping the water, if that makes sense. The boat did not hit anything on the first outing and the previous owner claimed this never happened to him. The steering is normal, not tight, all fluids are topped of in good condition, the prop does not appear bent, the drive unit appears tight, fixed trim tabs in the factory position. What am I missing?

Thanks-

When ever you start out your trim should be fully down. If you go out and run the boat and fully trim if you stop for any reason you have to run drive down and trim up all over again.
While running if the boat starts bouncing up and down that is what they call porpoising you are too trimmed out .Try running the trim down slightly till the porpoising stops

The trim tab on the outdrive should not be causing this. If it was the trim tab it would affect the steering every time you throttle up.

My guess would be un even load in the boat. Coolers, bait wells, cargo, etc on the starboard side and then a passenger of say 150 - 200 or more pounds moving to the starboard side on aft deck, while under way would cause exactly what you are describing

That's the torque of the Engine that might need to be corrected by the trim rudder on the lower unit. There a bolt on top of the out drive looking down turn the tab clock wise 1/4 " then try running keep adj until it put pressure on the boat to keep it from turning to starboard. Also is the outdrive loose as you can turn it from side to side with out the steering moving???Is this a bow rider an you might have to put the people on the port side an not on the bow??There a narrow boat an balance is critical.

Could be air in the hydraulic system that controls your trim of your I/O. That would explain the sudden rise of the bow. As for off to the right, check the fin located above the prop and it's alignment to center. That could alter your trajectory.
