First of all some of the answers to this young person are rather rude.
I was a waitress for 15 years in the 70's & 80's. There were no guidelines[as in some places] for tipping. We were paid the minimum wage & depended on our tips for extra cash just to survive. I did get tipped all the tim, but mostly then the average tip was anywhere from a quater to a dollar or so, unless I was working the Banguet Room where the tips were rather good.
As for hurting the servers feelings in most cases we would consider the person we were serving & could usually spot the students who for most part we knew wern't going to tip or tip a nickel, dime or so. It did not affect me in any way as I considered them to be mostly honest kids just trying to make ends meet at school. Don't feel bad about not being able to tip, as one day you may be in a good job & then you can make up on your tipping.
Good Luck on your studies & I hope you achieve whatever you get your masters in really well.
P.S. There are many lessons in life to come your way yet, so take it one day at a time & you'll be fine I'm sure.

Life lesson ...yeah you are inconsiderate. In most restaurants the waitstafff makes about $2.15 per HOUR. To make minimum wage they rely on tips. Yes, this is legal as the employer assumes that the waitstaf will receive tips and tips are income. It is customary to tip between 10-29% ddepending on the service. Most wait-persons work their butt off and deserve a tip. So, if you can't afford to leave a tip either don't eat out or go to McDonald's. When you eat and take up space and do not leave a tip you are in effect, preventing that waitperson from making a decent income for the shift.

Do you think they are waiting tables for fun? They rely heavily on their tips. It doesn't have to be a lot. Maybe tell them that things are tight right now, but let them know the service was good. I get tips where I work, and there have been several times when the kids would bring me the tip. I knew it took a lot of saving for the family to be able to make the trip there, so I will quite often hand it back to the kids and tell them to buy themselves a souvenir from there. (Yosemite) And to me, knowing they had a fun time on my tour is the best possible tip I could get.

Most food servers make a base pay of about one half of minimum wage, so they depend on tips for their livelihood. Unless your server is extremely rude or gives you absolutely horrible service, you should tip at the very least 10%. I usually tip a minimum of 20%.
If you can't afford to tip, go to McDonalds.

I always try to tip, if I can afford to eat somewhere that has them than it is common curtsy to tip. I don't always tip good sometimes it's 5 sometimes it's more, but I always leave something, these people don't get paid a wage like we do and depend on that money sometimes more than we do.

I guess you do not HAVE to.
But it is considered classless and rude.
I think that waiters can actualy be paid less than minimum wage because they get tips. So they basically live of them.
Some of your friends in college may be waiters as well so they are in your spot.
Just try your best...

i never eat out unless i know i can leave AT LEAST 20% in cash.
let me tell u this... if u're going to the same places and not leaving a tip... the joke is on u. payback is hell. i would never stiff a server and go back... and they do talk and they do remember... so even if u don't get the same one... BEWARE... and when they serve u with a smile.... it's for a reason.

If you can't afford to tip, you shouldn't be eating out! That's expensive. Buy Ramen noodles if you're too broke to tip! It's extremely rude and inconsiderate not to tip!
ROTFLMAO Wild1...good point!

It is not mandatory to leave a tip. I was a waitress, and although, it may make him/her slightly mad, at least try to leave a dollar. It is just a way to say, "hey, you did a good job, thanks for putting up with me"
God Bless,
Britany
