The idea behind tipping was "T-o I-nsure P-romptness" you tipped and next time you were there, you got better services.
However owners now a days have to follow a rule (or are supposed to), the wages of the waiter/tress PLUS their tips must at least meet minimum wage, or the owner is required (again if it is followed) pay additional to get them to minimum wage.
So yes, their pay can be (at a 7.25 minimum wage) close to $3 to $4 an hour. Of course, good times, and they can sometimes make more than minimum wage, some places like Outback will pay a little over minimum and their tips can put them up to a decent wage.
Dont forget also, as somone else mentioned, your tip will alot of times get split between, bartender if you have a drink, bus-boy, matri'de (never could spell it)
Since 15% is considered a standard, if you pay less, you are actually taking money from them. Sometimes crappy service will warrent a "penalty" but how would you like to have 15% of your grade removed from your classes because the teacher did not have time to grade the papers. Not your fault.. If you did the papers bad, then I could see it.
Personally, I try to Tip at Minimum 15% PLUS round up to nearest dollar, I did the 2 pennies one time, but the service was horrid.. 1/2 hour sitting, never got water, no silverware, food finally got ordered, served, still no silverware or drinks and each had been asked for sevaral times. orders were wrong, allergens were in 1 food when specificly asked to be not used.
My best tip was actually at olive garden, salad and breadsticks, and I tipped MORE than the meal.. so it worked out to be about 112% tip.. because he stayed nearby, as soon as I looked like I needed something, he was right there with it, drink never went below 1/3, food was fast, hot and fresh (salad of course cold), he took some time made some small talk to be friendly without being too close or too friendly.

Even if it is just a couple of dollars it is better than no tip! If you happen to go back to the same restaurant with the same waiter, and they remember you, you will not get the service you may expect. It is extremely rude not to leave a tip, that is pretty much what their paycheck consists of since waitresses only get paid a few bucks an hour from their employer! Just imagine if that was you working your butt off! The only acceptable reason not to leave a tip is if they were a really bad worker and some how offended you. If you still chose not to tip, do not do it around your date she'll think you're super CHEAP!

The less disposable income you have, the more of an occasion eating out (not take out) should be and the people serving you are responsible for that diversion. Originally, a tip was included with the prepayment as the order was placed; hence, the back-formation of (T)o (I)nsure (P)romptness. The gratuity should be an indication of appreciation not depreciation. I usually balance the food and service against what I would have at home.
00% - Totally inappropriate service. The managers needs a brief off floor notification and the bus person deserves at least a one dollar tip.
05% - Both food and service presentation less than what you would normally expect for that venue.
10% - Either food or service less than normal.
15% - Standard service and standard tip.
20% - Either food or service above normal.
25% - Both food and service above normal.
In most instances, the circumstances above also apply to delivery personnel. It can get confusing. Dining out, insurance and automobiles are the three purchases where negotiation is a requirement. Good Luck.

waitresses make CRAP per hour! Minimum wage is like $2.15per hour...That's a lot of time on their feet, putting up a lot of obnoxious, rude, demanding, lousy tippers every day!!
They DEPEND on their tips!!! AND, there are some places that report their tips by the gross income of the business. So when YOU don't tip them, they still have to pay taxes on money their company earned, that is not fair now is it?.....Not gonna hurt their feelings, of course it does!!! If she/he is a good server and you don't tip them, it's kind of like a slap in the face. "Serve me you peon" I'll never see you again?
You are 18?.....not a mature 18yr old that is for sure!
Look what you wrote, ridiculous! It's not funny at all!!!
Women support their children and families from those tips you seem to be too immature to leave!!! Grow up!!!

Forget Chris' response. Look, if you can't afford to tip, go eat at a fast food. I even tip at buffet restaurants. I usually tip 20%. If the service is poor, I'll tip 10%. If it's fair, 15%. If it's fantastic, 25-30%. In many restaurants, the wait staff make about half of minimum wage.

Its very rude. Servers live off of their tips they make. And in most places they have to tip out bussers, bartenders etc. And they tip based off of their sales so if you don't tip they are PAYING for you to eat there, take up their table that could be making them money and to deal with you.
If you are broke here is a tip- don't go out to eat! Who cares if you're in school- most of those servers are doing the same thing but they are working there to pay their way through college and some are even single parents who are trying to pay for school AND raise kids. You not tipping is hurting more people than you know. and if they aren't raising kids the tips are what is used to pay bills, rent, gas etc. Servers for the most part do not get paychecks.. if they aren't void then they are only for like $15 bucks.
Your parents should have taught you better. I would be ashamed if my child grows up and is that selfish.

it is fairly impolite. In some states, waiters are paid appreciably decrease than minimum salary because of the fact that is envisioned that information will seize up on it. And it does harm their emotions, because of the fact that is uncommon for persons to no longer tip, it makes the server ask your self whether they did something to make you so unhappy with the provider. oftentimes speaking, in case you relatively can no longer spare that extra desirable 3 money or so, you may in simple terms settle for which you will no longer discover the money for to consume out. Or, get it to pass. i will understand your concern on account which you do no longer make fairly some money (i've got been there!) yet in simple terms to be brutally honest, it s fairly ingrained interior the custom that that is something you do, and persons will probable choose you in case you short a server on the top. certainly, if I went out on a date with somebody and he paid and did no longer tip, there does no longer be a 2nd date. it may make me ask your self whether he's impolite in different methods besides.

Tipping is an appreciation for services rendered. If can don't tip if you patronise fastfood joints but in a restaurant its consider impolite not to tip regardless of age.

I usually tip at any resturant that there is service... because they only make a fraction of what you would make... I mostly do 10% but if the service is awesome then 15% max nothing more and if the service is poor then I give them about 5%...
