If you are a struggling college student I would do as follows....

Tell the waiter/waitress they did a GREAT job--if in fact they did- and that the service and food was great-if in fact it was...but you are a student and dont have much money....leave a little "something"

if you enjoyed the resturaunt and go back in the future and you are "pegged" as a non tipper- you may get bad service next time.....

Honesty is the best compliment and words sometimes speak louder than the sound of jingling change....

That is pretty rude. In some states, waiters are paid considerably less than minimum wage because it's expected that tips will compensate for it. And it does hurt their feelings, since it's rare for people to not tip, it makes the server wonder if they did something to make you so unhappy with the service. Generally speaking, if you really can't spare that extra 3 dollars or so, you should just accept that you can't afford to eat out. Or, get it to go. I can understand your concern since you don't make a lot of money (I've been there!) but just to be brutally honest, it s pretty ingrained in the culture that it's something you do, and people will probably judge you if you short a server on the tip. Honestly, if I went out on a date with someone and he paid and didn't tip, there would not be a second date. It would make me wonder if he's rude in other ways as well.

If you can not afford to tip the waitperson, you should stick to fast food restaurants. You should tip 100% of the time. I do At least in the US where waitperson relies on tips for their livelihood. (You should ascertain customs when traveling to other areas) Imagine that you, a student with 1000s of dollars of school obligations, were that waiter. The restaurant genrally pays wait staff less than minimum wage because they know that the difference will be made up in tips. Only it's not because some customers have an attitude like yours.
I tip 10% for fair service. !5% for good service and 20% or more for excellent service, always rounding it up to the nearest dollar. (If the service is really poor I still leave $1and inform the person and/or the manager)

I always tip as the system is built that way and that is expected so that a waiter can get a decent wage and if they are good will do well.People should all use a standard like the 10% rather than their feelings because some people expect so much and can be unresonable especially for some high and mighty thinkers.Have to say this too,how do the restaraunt owners get off with this ,the customer paying the wages of people they hire,I have some employees and I pay them myself very well compared to miminum wages, give them bonuses etc.?Can't get my stund head around that one.

yes you always tip it is very rude not to! if the server is really busy and you can tell there having a bad day (after all everyone has bad days once in awhile) a least leave something little for trying. it is very incosiderate to not tip servers only make 2.65 an hour how are we going to pay our bills if you dont leave a tip. if your too broke to tip the server then dont go out to eat stay home and make your own food get your own drinks and clean up your own mess and do your own dishes. Also did you know that a lot of servers are trying to pay there way through school to just like you so those 1000s of dollers your putting to your school were trying to do the same but when people like you come in and dont tip that takes away money for our schooling.

Like everyone else said, when you are deciding where/what to eat, take into account the cost of the tip when deciding whether or not you can afford it. If you stiff them, you are not just "also stiffing the others -- bartender, busboy, etc" as some have said, you are causing the server to pay for you! Some places, they are expected to "tip out" to the others based on a percentage of their sales.. not just on what they made. AND, when they do their taxes, their tips are automatically calculated as a percentage of their sales...
Stop being a jerk. It's not just rude. It's basically stealing. That said, if service is awful, leaving 3 bucks (instead of 6 on a $30 meal) makes a statement. If you skip completely, they assume you are an idiot and an Ahole. Trust me, if you frequent establishments in the area, you will become known and noone will want to wait on you. Wait staff/bartenders have their own little subculture and they talk to each other....
Also, never just leave coins. Even if you are alone at a Waffle House or somewhere cheap and your stuff only totals $6.00, leave a dollar bill, minimum. You are taking up seats and being cleaned up after...
One other point that you might make note of... a lot of those servers are doing the job to tide them over (while in school, until they move further up the ladder at a day job, to pay off some one time debt, etc).. You may never see them again -- at that job. You might encounter them down the road... perhaps on the other side of a job interview, judging your character. You might consider that they might remember you stiffing them. How would that get things started for you?
Perhaps, to supplement your tight income during college, you should try out waiting tables somewhere.. you'll have a whole new perspective that ought to serve you well in years to come.

More than 1 Q here sooo...
1) ur food may taste odd, when u return.
Or they'll just ignore YOU.
2) yes, it is; we like to eat as well.
3) then eat where u can afford all the services.
i.e. fast food.

I worked on tips, for years!
We get paid less then min. wage.
We rely on the tips to eat!, pay bills,
buy toilet paper, feed & clothe our kids!
I start @ 10-15 % (depends on the restaurant).
And you can work ur way up or down from there.
If the bill is small, I leave a dollar for each person.
YOU CAN afford $1.00!
An avg., bill for 1 person would be 20.00 or less;
2.00 is 10%.
If the bill is under 20.-
& u leave 2.- that's more than 10%.
Come! on! man! u said ur getting ur master's...?
then why can't u spell better?

Like everyone else said- if you can't afford to tip don't eat out. Don't waste the server's time. They too could be a struggling college student trying to pay the bills and tuition. At least they are out there trying to make an honest dollar-
But of course, if the service is horrible- tip accordingly. But keep in mind that if you get good service and you don't tip, that server has to tip out the bussing staff and the bartenders no matter what. So you are not only stiffing the server, but the bussers, and the bar as well!!! Don't eat out if you can't tip. After you get an education and a great job you can go out and enjoy it- and help someone else trying to make a decent living!

The history of T.I.P.S. (acronym) : To Insure Prompt Service.
It was given before the meal and not after the meal. People in the back then days tipped before their meal, that way making sure their service was good throughout their meal. Now days people tip after their meal depending on what kind of services they got.
I tried that back then days way to tip a few times, and by golly, it sure works. If the service was very good, I'd still leave another tip accordingly. Just thought I'd give a little history to that.

Absolutely tip your server! We make less than 1/2 of minimum wage. How would you feel if you worked for an hour, but only got paid about $3. We all rely on our tips....I strive to give great service and in return hope for great tips. Most of us are struggling through college too and need to pay our bills and tuition.
