Van Morrison is an individual, so is classed under his surname.

Van Halen is a group, so are classed under their first letter.

For example:

Bon Jovi ~ class under B
Jon Bon Jovi ~ class under J

As others have pointed out, Van Halen is the name of the group (and also happens to be the surname of 2 of the members). On the other hand, Van is a first name (short for his middle name, Ivan) and Morrison is the surname. So Van Morrison is filed under M for the same reason that Michael Jackson is filed under J.

Van Morrison is the name of the main singer.
Van Halen is the name of the band, and when most people would look for that band, they would instinctively look under "v"

There is no true reason other than that van halen has always been thought of as Van Halen, while Van morrison woud also be thought of as Morrison.

since van halen being under v is what their used to it is under v. since van morrison is easier to look up by the last name morrison , thats where it is , under m

THIS IS FOR REAL

Van Morrison is the dude's first and last name, so you alphabetize it under the M's. Van Halen is a person's first and last name BUT rather the last name only. It would be filed under V no matter what. Wal-Mart is correct.

Alphabetical order usually goes by last names. Van is his first name, Morrison is his last name. Van Halen is a last name as well, but also the name of the band

Van is a first name for Morrison but Van Halen is all one name (last name). The filing system is by last names.

'Van' is Van Morrison's 1st name, Morrison of course being his last name.
Van Halen is brothers Eddie and Alex's last name.
Van Halen is a Dutch surname(last name) much like Van der Linden, Van buren, Van Dyk(e), Van den Berg, etc.
'Van' actually means 'of'. So with a name like Van den Berg, Berg meaning 'mountain' and 'den' or 'der' meaning 'the', the name means 'Of the Mountain'.
'Van' can also mean 'from'. 'Halen' means 'to get' or 'obtain'.
So Van Halen means 'Of Obtainment', or 'Of Ownership', or 'From Obtainment' / 'From Ownership' I think.
Oh, here's some trivia for you; Both Eddie and Alex Van Halen were born in Amsterdam Holland. Their Father was Dutch, and their Mother was Dutch Indo(Eurasian), or Indo/Dutch as it's sometimes. Holland has a large Indonesian population, from immigrants that arrived mainly in the 1940's and 50's.
Anyways, I'm surprised your Wal-Mart is so organized. In our Wall-Mart where I live, you'll find Kenny Rogers mixed in with Metallica, or Johnny Cash hangin' out with 'The Police'!
I still see stores filing Jethro Tull incorrectly in the 'T' section, 'Max Webster' in the 'M' section, 'King Crimson' in the 'C' section (ha ha) and once I even saw Led Zeppelin next to ZZ Top in the 'Z' section! This is mostly done by younger people who don't know any better...can't blame 'em I suppose! That sh*t's old! (but not as old as me) bla bla bla!

Van Morrison is an individual artist, so he would be classified under his last name, M. Van Halen is the band's name, so they're under V.

Its possible that some person who was in the store put the van halen cd in the V's because he was holding it then he just put it there.
