It is about 8 inches long and 7 across. I need to know what to feed it and what species it is. I live in Utah. It was found near a neighborhood.

Take a look at this link: http://www.desertusa.com/june96/du_tort.html

It could be a desert tortoise, Utah is part of their native range. They are endangered and strictly protected.

It is also quite possible that you have found an escaped non native pet species such as a Sulcata tortoise.

A wildlife rehabber in your area should be able to provide you with a positive I.D. Both species primarily feed on grasses, greens, weeds and succulents.

Hello.

There are all kinds of different turtles and tortoises that can be found in the wild.

However, it would be best to not keep it as a pet, even though it was found in a neighborhood. The best case scenario would be to locate a local wild life rescue who can take him and provide care for him and release him in a more appropriate area.

It's difficult to capture wild animals and let them live a happy life in captivity. Allowing these animals to remain wild is in their best interest.

If you need help locating a wild life rescue in your area, a simple search on a search engine can be useful, or call the local animal control and they can typically give you the information for these contacts.

I couldn't tell you what kind it is without seeing the colors. Sorry. However, there is something I can tell you.

Tortoises are rare, and no matter where you are, it is illegal to take them from the wild.

In my internet wanderings, I have also read that they usually won't eat anything when you bring them in from the wild. :(

That's sooo cool that you found one, but please let him stay where you found him! He (or she) needs to go find a boyfriend/girlfriend and continue the population. ;)

Down here in Texas, the tortoises are in their mating season. I saw my first one in 10 years about 3 days ago. I was very excited!

Check out the link below, set the tortoise free, and feel proud and lucky that you were able to see one! Take care!

That is so strange.... about a month ago I saw one crawling across the road..... I didn't know what it was at first.. I drove about 3/4 of a mile and turned around to go back and take it out of the road..... we have a lot of road kill here..... I got back where I though it was and it was gone..it crawled to the roadside or someone gave it help......... I hate to see any kind of animal die before it's time. North of Conroe Texas.

call up your local vet and ask his opinion, i'd say. i called em about a baby cardinal a few years back and they surprisingly knew just what to do.

I dont think you should keep him. You should find a lake or pond and release it,
