Yes you do need to have a driver's license to purchase a motorcycle from a dealership but it doesn't need to show Class CM1 on the license. It would be best if it did.

When you take your drivers test, it is testing you on CAR OPERATION. That is, driving a CAR. If you want to, say, ride a motorcycle, you must take a different test IN ADDITION to the test you took to drive.
Licensing is done, as others have said, by endorsement. You have a "class C license", which in my state means you can drive a car...and your class M license, which allows you to operate a motorcycle. There are also endorsements for truckers, RV operators, et cetera.

No, you do not. Class "C" is for driving cars. You need a M1 as a motorcycle endorsement. You can take the motorcycle test and get your M1. A regular license to drive a car involves a different driving and written test.

In most states, no. I am not currently aware of any states that have that requirement, but remember, a motorcycle permit or license doesn't authorize you to drive a car. I have pulled over three different individuals that had that misconception. The easiest way to find out is to call your local DMV.

Where? In many states "M" for motorcycle is an endorsement to your license, in some there is a stand alone motorcycle license.

As oklatom says, it's usually an endorsement (or add on) to your regular license. Where you are makes a difference. Here in NH, you can get an endorsement added, or, if you don't have an "Operator's" license you can get a "Motorcycle only" license which will allow you to operate a motorcycle, moped, scooter or "motor driven cycle".

You cannot get a MC only if you have lost your operator's.
