This is so different from Fushigi Yuugi where it kinda lays out the plot the 2nd episode. I'm so confused on the whole concept of all the different countries provinces and cities along with the unicorn thingers that help choose the leader person?
Does anyone know of any really informative fansites about it? I've been to about 3 and each one hadnt been updated in a while, and didnt help me out that much.

Also, is there a romantic subplot in this anime, or is it basically all fantasy and action.

Thanks =]

The Twelve Kingdoms is a Japanese fantasy series by Fuyumi Ono consisting of eleven novels and a short story collection, and a 45-episode anime series produced by Studio Pierrot in 2002. The story is loosely based on ancient Chinese mythology and set in a world influenced by Han-era China. It has little to do with Fushigi Yuugi, and you might not like Twelve Kingdoms if you like Fushigi Yuugi.

With all those novels to smush into the anime, it can get confusing, and I sugest you buy the first book from Tokyopop, its one of the best novels I have read in a long time. The twelve kingdoms is a retrospective and introspective stroty (meaning the novels and the anime focus on the development of the main character, how the events in her life shape her personality, views, morality and ethincs) so there is little romance. Plenty of twists and turns and surprises.

The Twelve Kingdoms is a more accurate portrayal of the Twelve Kingdoms books from Chinese folklore. The Twelve Kingdoms are based roughly around actual people in Chinese history during the warring states era. Fushigi Yuugi, obviously, is a far more fictional and adapted version of the Twelve Kingdoms.

My advice? Just Google Twelve Kingdoms and do a bit of searching and you'll find dozens of sites that go into details of the books and the history behind them. Or better yet, read the books themselves. They're dense, but really quite good.

At first twelve kingdoms seemed a lot to digest from the start with all the rules and formalities each kingdom has. Once you manage to understand each of them, you will find yourself a very good anime with an amazing plot.
