It means the person wearing the helmet with the dot (the QB) can hear the calls that the offensive coordinator is calling. There is only one "green dot" helmet allowed on the field for each team at one time.

Every one here is right. It's to mark the communication device is in the helmet so the person can hear the call. A point people didn't say yet is the holder on field goals and extra points can't have that helmet. If it's a QB they must have a different one. They were having too many late calls from the sideline if the coach saw a formation that they could fake at the last second.

The player wearing the green dot has a communication device in their helmets to communicate with coaches. There is only one green dot player allowed on the field for each team. Typically the QB for offense and LB on Defense have the green dot.
Seneca Wallace, Seahawks backup QB, has to switch helmets if he is going into the game playing another position (i.e. WR) since the helmet he normally wears has a green dot on it.
