No. Strictly speaking, you do not have to be skinny.

But the fact remains that slim, attractive people get the most roles. But the are also two sides to this: There are a lot of people who work themselves to the bone to be skinny, attractive and blonde, and then at the casting call, they line up next to a line of actresses who look almost identical to themselves. The important thing is to have something special unique about your look. Be memorable.

Don't concentrate on being skinny, concentrate on having a healthy BMI and a healthy body, so you can have energy and strength; ours is an exhausting trade.

Also, if you are interested in stage acting, it is much more forgiving then film acting if you have a belly pouch.

Film is much more difficult, because being on camera automatically adds ten pounds.

Actors come in all shapes and sizes, especially in theater, which is about real people. Cases in point:

Danny Devito
Beyonce
Nikki Blonsky
Marisa Janet Winokur
Sally Struthers
Rosanne Barr
Mo'nique
John Goodman

You get the idea.

The great thing is that, for as many faceless skinny actresses and actors out there, there are positive, healthy looking role models and heavier people who are happy with themselves, too. The public loves them because of what they offer, and not how they look. That's how it should always be.

So, just be happy with yourself (if you want to act, that is) and maybe your charisma, not your looks, will win some people over.

The first actor to get paid a Million Dollars a year was Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle. As his nickname implies, he was not skinny. In fact, the studio he was signed with paid him extra to keep his weight up.

John Belushi, John Candy and Chris Farley all had successful careers.

It might be harder to be the lead, but you can be an actor without being skinny.

(Sorry, I can't think of any female examples offhand)

no. not skinny. if you are "thin" then you do have a better chance at getting a lead part though. like america ferrera who is a latina who is not to be called skinny. however, she's still beautiful & curvy & has a great career. idk how raven simone's career is going but she also was not "skinny". that word's just a model's ideal. an actress is not a model but has to represent a situation or person that you can relate to so they can be 5'9 & 95lbs. if you're asking because you considering a career in theater, don't strive to look like a runway model. just remember that exercise and a healthy diet are going to make you a better person than starvation.

Nope. Skinny bland pretty people are a dime a dozen in the acting world. They get one shot to prove themselves, and if they don't stand out in some way, they are history a lot faster than someone with some character in their face and body. It's actually HARDER for the thin girls to get anywhere, because they have so much competition!

you don't have to be skinny to be an actor, but you do have to be skinny to be an actress.

Just kidding - there are some roles for "heavy" females, but you probably won't be a leading lady.

No you dont have to be skinny to be an actress. All the celebrities out there think they have to be stick thin to be a role model and stuff but, really its the opposite. It would help to be thin but, if you are born curvy dont change the way you look. Dont sellout and let the pressure get to you that you HAVE to be skinny when you DONT.

Of course not! Look at Queen Latifah and Rosie O'Donall they are successful woman and wonderful role model. As long as your acting ability is good you can go into that buisness.
