You didn't mention where in California you are - that's a big state!

Here are some options to consider, depending on family interests, how far you are willing to drive etc.:

1. Shakespeare Festival in Ashland Oregon
2. drive the Pacific Coast Highway, stopping along the way as you wish in all the little coast towns. On the north end Santa Cruz has a boardwalk with carnival rides etc.
3. For outdoor adventure, Death Valley has some great hikes
4. Yosemite National Park is also a great family destination for outdoor walks, hikes etc.
5. Vegas is a decent day's drive from LA
6. It'll be hot, but if you can get to Vegas, then you can get to Zion national Park in Utah jsut a few hours further west - again, fantastic hiking and nature drives.

Lots and lots to choose from - let us know your kids ages, interests, what part of California you are in and how far you are willing to drive and we can help you narrow it down....

Ditch the SUV and get a car that isn't so bad on gas, then hit northern CA. The Yosemite area is spectacular!

To get a good answer, you need to provide additional details: Where in CA are you, how old are the children, and are you determined to go out of state or would something in CA, which is wide and varied and very large, suffice?
