It was economics. With the push to abolish slavery, the plantation owners would lose a tremendous amount of revenue and political clout. Remember, a slave counted as one fifth of a vote. The 'moral' issue of slavery was something of a political hot spot, but the real reason they were opposed was purely economic.

The main issue causing the American Civil War was the conflict caused by the differing beliefs in states' rights. The Southern states believed that the government was too involved in telling them how to run their lives and how to run their economy. Slavery was a vital aspect of the South's economy, therefore abolishing slavery would've destroyed their way of life.

Seceding from the United States, South Carolina took the stance that states have the supremacy to leave their federal union when that federal union has become oppressive. That is why the Southern states formed a confederacy - a loosely bound union of separately existing entities (much like the United Nations).

The Civil War did not start out about slavery, although that was used by the North to gain European support for their cause. I guarantee to you that the political powers at the time were not interested in the welfare of the slaves, but merely in the principles of government.

U talking about he American Civil War? We had one too, you know. I always thought that the American Civil war was about Slavery, the North wanted to abolish it & the South didn't. The English civil War was about the Divine Right of Kings to rule, or not. Hope this helps.

Its was the Souths booming agricultural economy and English monarchy type of system. Slavery Had nothing to do with the war.. it was only a political move Lincoln played against the south to get them to give up with out succession

It doesn't matter what I think. The fact is, the war between the north and the south was all about Lincolns proposals - especially, but not exclusively, the one dealing with slavery.
