Negotiating is easy. Finding two parties willing to negotiate is the challenge. Before entering a negotiation, determine how committed the other party is to a negotiation.

Negotiation is the "art" of finding the common ground in conflicting needs or wants. You want soup. I want salad. These are different wants and desires. The negotiation is for both to relinquish their desires and choose something else. Neither party will feel that they have compromised or have had to give up something. Both give up something. The transaction remains equal. The common ground is that we are both hungry and both want food. Let's try something else.

A successful negotiator is the one who can see beyond their desires and find the common ground.

The second option is to have both parties get what they want, but at different times. You want salad. I want soup. We can have soup for lunch and then salad for dinner. We both get what we want, just at different times.

A successful negotiator is one who can delay instant gratification for a delayed gratification.
