I remember in High School going to the cafeteria in the morning and getting a donut and large milk shake for 25 cents.
During the summer my friends and I would walk along Hiway 1 from Fort Ord to Seaside picking up cans and bottles. We would get between 1 and 5 cents each. We didn't have a shopping cart like they do now, just a paper bag. We usually get 1 or 2 dollars and spent it on candy. We'd get cotton candy and that pink popcorn in a plastic bag, as well as Nestles Crunch. That was in about 1966.

Well Belive it or not I could buy less as far as toys are concerned. I would hav eto spend a lot of money on one toy and pay 6-12 dollars. Now with the invention of the dollar store I can buy the same toys a lot cheaper. Candy wise prics have gone up i could but 2 bags of chips or chocolate bars instead of one.

I remember when I was about 6 years old my family and I were visiting Sea World in San Antonio, TX. My Dad gave my brother and I each $1 for being good the entire day (just an excuse to give us money, we were good kids) and I was able to purchase something from the gift shop with my dollar. Today, if I were to take a dollar into Sea World, I doubt I'd be able to even buy a bottled water.

I was a fan of 2 cent sour apple double bubble gum. I could have rotted out every tooth in the neighborhood for a dollar!
The math teacher said I couldn't chew gum unless I brought some "for everybody"! I showed up the next day with my little brown sack and passed out gum before we learned anything that day. I think the teacher learned I'd call her bluff!

When I was a kid, there was actually such stuff as penny candy.....I could get two pairs of wax lips....two Turkish Taffy's....ten of those wafer "flying saucers" with the little candy beads inside, two bubble gum cigars, a root beer popcicle, five rolls of Smarties, and still have enought left for twelve packs of baseball cards. What a haul!
