I am thinking about moving to Anchorage and would like to know if it is realistic to live up there for between 45-50 thousand a year?

That's cutting it pretty slim. I needed that to live in Florida prior to retiring in'03.

If you're going to work in Anchorage, you will most likely make more than that. I spent 2 months parked next to a repair shop last year, getting a new engine in my motorhome. While there I did a little research on jobs I might do and found an electrician made triple what I made in Florida. Diesel tech's were making $150,000+ per year. The pay is good, but many costs are really high.

We found food, fuel and other necessities were comparible to prices in the lower 48. Property taxes are high in Anchorage so you might want to check out Eagle River, Palmer or Wassila. These communities are close enough to make a fairly easy commute.

Two places I was told to stay away from while I was uo there, Mountain View and Muldoon Road. There's too much gang activity in thoses areas.

Good luck and dress warm.

yes only heating costs and fuel costs will be the highest part of your living account.
