Some cars use that light as a handbrake "On" light and a brake system "Failure" light. Check your brake fluid. If it's OK drop by the dealer or your friendly mechanic for a brake system checkup.

have you tried pulling up on the brake again? if there is no tension, you more than likely broke one of the brake cables. take a look underneath and try spraying it with wd40. if you don't want to do this bring it to a mechanic and find out what happened.

thereis probably a switch in back of the handbrake under the console covering it that is bad or needs adjusted.
