jonmcn really has the right answer.
These insects navigate by the light of stars or moon. They are confused by a light that is so close they can run into it. When they follow the moon or stars, they continue on in the direction they want to go because with the great distance of those kinds of light, they never actually get there but can follow that kind of light in a straight direction.
In nature where they evolved, there were no artificial lights to cause them to fly to their death.

They confuse the light bulb with the sun. These creatures swarm to reproduce in the daytime or under a large lamp. It is a natural instinct in some insects.
Bug zappers use this instinct to kill insects, but misquotes don't reproduce this way so mostly moths become the casualties. This is why they don't work very well. Crickets like the light and often swarm well lighted areas at night. During the day time they would keep their swarm under cover of the foliage and so hide. In my area this is a huge problem with lots of crickets making the stores look ugly. A lot of animals are programed to die soon after reproduction so there will be a lot of dead crickets around the front of the well lighted store.

Many insects navigate by light sources. A powerful artificial source can disorient them greatly.

They are attracted to the heat not the light per-say! They are invertebrates and cold blooded. They must keep warm by using the sun's or in this case light's warmth. Therefor they equate light with warmth. They just can't tell it is going to kill them in the process.
