When I was lying in my bed that night, I couldn’t sleep because my voice in my head kept echoing through my mind telling me to kill them."

You're reading the words of 12-year-old Christopher Pittman, struggling to explain why he murdered his grandparents, who had provided the only love and stability in his turbulent life. He was angry with his grandfather, who had disciplined him earlier that day for hurting another student during a fight on the school bus. So later that night, he shot both of his grandparents in the head with a .410 shotgun as they slept and then burned down their South Carolina home, where he had lived with them.

hrm....let's see....perhaps it might have had something to do with his GRANDPARENTS being his disciplinarians. Where were Mr. Pittman's PARENTS? Hello?

He must have been disturbed for quite some time, because *no one* just "snaps"--there are always signs beforehand.

Good question. I think it has to do with a culture of destruction, and the fact that kids are always told "no"...They have no way to let out the frustrations which they feel. In some places in the US they refuse to let the kids play TAG because they are afraid someone will get hurt! Maybe it is because kids have so little control over their lives now...it is as if we expect them to live in a little plastic bubble....and when they realize that THEY can be in control it sometimes makes them snap.

Family unit may not be as strong. Lot's of violence on tv and in video games. Little kids are still developing mentally and need good role models to look up to. Not the role models in video games that steal cars and shoot everyone in their way. Adults can differentiate but kids have trouble.

Turn your self in.

This is not a joking matter.

Seeing a Psychologist has a negative social stigma and it has a negative connotation.

People that see Psychologist or Psychiatrist are seen as people that cannot handle life.

Is it really a suprise that mental illness flourishes in our society? Our social programs are a joke, we glorify violence, we sexually repress our youth, and we use the television as a babysitter. It's a wonder that anyone stays sane.

I don't think more people are mentally ill. I think we are more aware of mental health issues and have access to better quality mental health care and drugs than previous generations.
