No it's not, just an icon there. However, the best view of Rio (according to my experience) is from the Sugar Loaf, not from Christ the Redemeer. Too many people, too crowded and too high, it's much better from the suger loaf. In Rio there are THOUSANDS of things to see and do, been there 3 times and havent seen everything. I guess you have to start from the basics and that would be the Christ but it's not a Catholic thing just for Catholics, its just a country icon or symbol.

I would like to see it if I have a chance to go to Brazil. It is only a statue but it have a lot attention and many wants to know the reason of it being build and place there. Christ is glorified each time someone asked the purpose of the statue. Brazilians did not ask any one to pray to the statue or made the statue to be worship or said : if any one wants to see Christ, then come to Brazil or pray to the direction of Brazil Christ the Redeemer Statue .

Have many things to see in Brazil.
The Christ the Redeemer, 'Pao de açucar', Copacabana, Barra da Tijuca, the beachs, the malls, the zoo, The Conteporany museum, The China Vista, Maracanã, the parties.

The best place of the world is Rio de Janeiro.

But have others cities: Gramado, Recife, Brasilia, Fernando de Noronha and Florianopolis.

While it certainly is an iconic emblem of Brasil and particularly Rio de Janeiro, I don't know that I could say it is the best thing to see in Brazil.

As usual, I give a qualified answer as the answer you seek depends on your likes and tastes.

Other "best things" to consider: The Amazon river, the beautiful beaches, the colonial architecture of Bahia or the modern architecture of Brasilia, Futebol (soccer), Samba, Capoeira, the Pantanal, Iguacu Falls, etc.

The thing I enjoyed the most in my travels to Brasil was getting to know the people - friendly and outgoing.

There is much to see and do in Brasil.

NO! It became one of the 7 new "wonders" because of a lot of voters (called on personaly by the Brazilian President Lulu, yeah big country, lots of people a president calling on 'his' people worked out) but you could try : The Iguassu Waterfalls, The Itaipu (water)dam, have a trip in Pantanal, see Ouro Preto, visit Curitiba (lively town) go on the Amazon river starting in Belem (which has a nice (fish)market, and beautiful buildings, just a pitty most of them are so 'run down')
