I would check w/ your doctor. One month old is quite early to be having "solids". A one month old should be eating 20-30 ounces a day. Is he eating more that that? Putting 1 tsp of cereal in one bottle a day will not cut down the amount of formula he is eating a day. Feeding babies cereal does not always mean they will sleep better at night. His little tummy may be to young to handle the cereal. It is now recommended not to start cereal and solids until 4-6 months of age, and to use a spoon when you do it, not a bottle.
I would check w/ your doctor if you are concerned about his eating habits and weight.

If your baby sleeps better with the rice cereal it is because his system can't process the cereal and he needs to sleep to reserve his energy to work that rice through. In short, no it isn't ok. You need to ask your pediatrician about his weight. As for the cereal, he doesn't need it. A 1 month old baby would still need to eat at least every 1-3 hours. Typically, he should be eating about 16 - 24 oz every day. HE DOES NOT NEED CEREAL. Check out the website below.

I would say no cereal untill the doc oks it usually at 4 months,if you give a baby cereal to early it can mess up his digestive tract babies are not developed enough to handle anything other then breastmilk or formula right now ,ask your doc he/she would tell you the same thing! lots of people are misguided by that.and thats not that bad its every three to four hours my 8 month old was drinking 4-8 oz every 2 -3 hrs when she was like 2 or 3 months old! now she is back down to 4oz every 4 hours and she is 8 months old maybe its a growth spurt that makes these lil guys develop such appetites!

ok 1st i'm a peds nurse and that's thoroughly secure to supply your toddler rice in his bottle. in case you ask your father and mom you have been maximum in all likelihood given cereal via itself at around 6 weeks if no longer quicker. the sole important reason of no longer doing this now's obesity. the quantity of rice which you would be including won't choke your toddler. this is not sufficient to alter the feel of the formulation that plenty. the clarification your customary practitioner is advising you to function this is to help weigh the formulation down so which you may desire to communicate. And realistically there is no difference in including the rice or paying for formulation with rice already in it. i could do what your customary practitioner is telling you to do because of the fact he's conscious of what he's doing. He went with the aid of particular guidance to be waiting to handle infants.

YES! It is ok to feed your baby a little cereal. My son needed cereal added to his bottle b/c he needed more food. My daughter did not need the extra cereal. EVERY BABY IS DIFFERENT. The people that said its lazy or leads to obesity or the baby will choke are misinformed. Some pediatricians disagree with giving infants cereal early and some agree with it for some babies. NO ONE knows your baby like you. Don't let people tell you how to raise him and don't let people tell you what to feed him. Boys need the extra food and babies will only eat as much as they need so don't worry about him getting overweight (thats for people that take their kids to McDonalds everyday). Now you go take care of that hungry little baby and give him a little cereal in his bottle.

I am going to answer this part in response to the question and part in response to the "lazy" comment above.
I am a mom of three boys. All three of them received cereal in bottles using cross cut nipples at some point in their early years, ie...2 months, 3 months, etc. THIS IS NOT LAZY. This is FOR the baby. There is no rule in the book that says you are required to underfeed your baby and thereby deprive him/her of sleep because they are waking up hungry as well as punishing yourself with the lack of sleep as well. I frankly am tired of people like you, referring to those that are willing to try different methods of comfort as laziness. If a pediatrician says that it is ok...WHY not try it. And to a degree you are right...just because your mom did it doesn't make it right, but if it works and isn't bad for the baby and pediatrician suggested, then so be it. Your baby won't be overweight because you are not shoveling it in....your baby will only eat until they are full...now if we could all do that as adults, wouldn't life be grand!!! It's the choices we make as parents that matter in the long run. A little whole grain cereal won't cause obesity in later life...its the damn hotdogs and fast food as well as all the processed foods that make kids fat, not good whole grains found in those cereals. Give me a break. Sorry that a question like this gets such hostile remarks from opinionated people that are sooo quick to form judgments about your parenting skills.

Bittany never add anything to a baby's bottle. No solids should be given until a baby is 3 months old. Their digestive systems just can't handle food so young and the damage can stay with them for the rest of their lives. You can't overfeed a baby on milk, so don't worry about that at all.

At three months you can start your baby on baby rice and then you can start adding things to it like stewed pear.

Take advice from your health visitor(?) or a baby care book on what to feed him at what stage.

Added Note
My answer is not intended to be judgemental in any way. A genuine question was asked by a mum who wants to do the right thing by her baby. Don’t worry too much though. If your baby is gaining weight, and is happy then you must be feeding him correctly.

back when my mom was just having her first kids they said 2 weeks now they say 4 to 6 months, your baby wont get obese, he'll just get big like mine but its normal. plus putting cereal in bottles is a bad idea, wait until he shows you he's ready to eat from a spoon THEN try cereal. I know someone who was doing the cereal in the bottle and got too used to it, and her daughter ended up with an intestinal infection. he's going thru a growth spurt just let him drink and it will be fine, mine did the same thing :D

No, you should not. Exposing your child to even a little solid food before they are ready highly increases the chance they will develop allergies to that particular food later on. And yes, it is a leading cause of obesity also. Just be patient with your baby's sleeping. It will become more regular in a few months.

No it's not safe to put cereal in formula. Reason being that the baby will tend to over eat, cereal expands, and then vomit or worst case, resperate the mixture. A better idea is to just let him eat his formula until he is full. He's not going to over eat because what babies do better than most of us adults is listen to their bodies when it comes to being full or not. Talk to your pediatrician before starting cereal.
