As an ex speedo shop tech, I can tell you this. First you have to remove the speedometer from the dash, which is probably not going to be an easy task. Very few are. Once it's out, then disassemble the unit until you can get to the odometer gears and wheels. Try to determine why it doesn't work, and buy the correct parts to repair it, taking special care not to scramble the mileage on the wheels. Also not an easy task.
Reassemble and test. OR Find a speedo repair shop and take it for repair and calibration. The easiest way to find a good one is to contact your local police department and ask where they get there speedometers calibrated. These are usually the best places to go.

Did you get a maintenance schedule with the vehicle. I mean a book with the mileage notation when each repair and maintenance was done? If not you would not know about the odometer. Federal law states that an odometer reading cannot be altered. But with the electronic ones some computer genius could have found a way to change it. With 44K on it I would change the rotors and pads and start keeping a journal/notebook on the maintenance and repair mileage/dates for yourself. Did you do some comparative shopping? What is a comparable vehicle/mileage selling for? This may give you a clue.

Since the speedometer is working, and I assume that it is, then you will have to pull the assembly and send it to a instrument repair shop. They will repair the gauge and return it to you. Then when you sell the car, you have to check the box that says the actual mileage is unknown. good luck.

go to a junk yard and get you a new instrument panel since yours is the digital kind it would be worth replacing rather than fixing
