I recently(less than 8 months) got a new 350 put into my car and noticed that black smoke comes from the exhaust when ever you hit the gas petal, the more gas you give it the more smoke comes out. My friend said he thinks that maybe some of the rings have gone bad on the pistons, is this possible being such a new engine? How can I pinpoint the problem with out paying someone else to do a diagnostics? By the way it is carbureted. thanks

Black smoke is gas; white or pale blue smoke is oil.

Unfortunately burning oil is not an easy fix. I would check the engine's breather system to make sure that its functioning properly and not pumping oil into the air intake system. That being said its most likely a worn mechnical part inside the engine (i.e worn piston rings, valve seals etc). With the amount of miles on the engine complete rebuild or replacment would be necessary. And that might not be cost effective on an 11 year old car.

Yep man, black smoke is furl smoke.. Your not burning all of the fuel..

Look at your car. It could be just a matter of a simple turn of a couple screws or changing out jets.

Could also be your ING. system.. If your ing. system aint up to par, then it can't send a strong enough sprak to burn the fuel..

Weak coil tends to do that.. So will fouled out spark plugs, or the wrong plugs for the engine. Bad plug wire or 3 would also cause it.

Black smoke is a indication that the fuel mixture is on the rich side, for optimum performance and mileage the air/fuel mixture should be 14.7:1.
Check to make sure the choke is open completely and the air filter is not clogged...
The float level could also be high causing the motor to run rich

Burning oil will produce blue smoke. Black smoke is an indication that you're running too rich. Need to have a mechanic who understands carbs take a look at it.

Blue smoke is oil. Sound like your blowing carbon off your valves. Try dumping some valve cleaner in your gas tank on your next fill up.

Nick-

Black Smoke is fuel. Your Carb is probably set too rich.

If you could email me a few more details I think I might be able to help you out.

Need to know type of car, what carburetor, Rochester or Holly.

Thanks!

It's running to rich wich means it's getting to much gas.A simple ajustment or new jets in the carb will do the trick.

Black smoke is excess and unburned gasoline. (Oil consumed and burned is blue in color. It's the carburetor.
