Try The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson; any and all of H.P. Lovecraft's tales; The Moonstone by Wilke Collins; The Woman in White by Wilke Collins; The Witching Hour by Anne Rice; and the best ghost story I have ever read-- The Beckoning Fair One by Oliver Onions (yes, Onions).

"The Windup female" by employing Paolo Bacigalupi is steampunk/dystopian/sci-fi, and specific between the main intense novels i've got ever study, that's why I recommend it to you (even with the incontrovertible fact that it has no *sorry* romantic sub-plots - until you count quantity one character's sexual activity in yet another - or intense fable). yet believe me, i does no longer recommend this to you if it hadn't actually blown my suggestions. i desire to assert it grow to be voted the 9th maximum suitable novel of 2009 - i think of. in case you desire something with a divserse set of useful characters, with no longer something sugar-lined, this could properly be a good thank you to pass. as quickly as I have been given so far, i could no longer positioned it down. Oh, yeah, and there's a few supernatural aspects. A ghost. besides, the ghost can no longer even take from the realism of the radical - it relatively is how good it relatively is!
