If unknown to your internet friend, you are black...or had an abortion--would you still maintain the friendship, if they made a racist or pro-life comment?

Being "Black" is not a mistake. In fact, I tend to gravitate to those of different cultures, even those that are in the States.
Now an abortion is a different story, I would never hold someone responsible for an action that they regret. Yeah, I'm a pro-lifer. But, and this is just between you and I (since you know so much about me) I have a wife who has had one, a step daughter that has had one and almost married my girl friends sister (twin) who I took to the clinic. I'm a blasted "rescuer" personality. These people did what they felt they had to do, but, everyone of them dealt with regrets. I dislike the actions but, still love the people. Now if they were at opposite ends of the table on the abortion with me, I just don't know how I would handle it. I love my wife even though she's a liberal democrat. Maybe the trait carries over. I just don't know. Good question, I'm going to have to sleep on this one!

In general "No".

In specific "It dependents on if he/she intended to insult me by making this comment."

I have many a friend in life who make comments that I thoroughly disagree with. We are nonetheless still friends.

Why should I be anymore critical of a person on the internet?

(BTW, asking this question makes all your friends assume that you are talking about them. Should that be something they should think about?)

I can tell you that in general people are more than the sum of their comments and if you found that you liked someone it was for a reason and that reason may not have been the comment for which you write.

But then again, you live and learn and in the process change your mind about people.

If you feel you must leave this person then do as you must but remember, in our cases, neither you nore I have told people who we are, our profiles are relatively blank, and if people offend us then we are not exactly being fair to judge them when when we do not allow them to truly judge us.

We can not tell them to fill in our blank and be offended when it is not to our liking.

Or maybe we can and that is who we are.

And as this is the second question you have asked on a "throwing the baby out with the bath water situation" I have to assume that you have such a friend and you want a tangible answer, but; you will not get it in this forum.

Besides this is killing your laughing practice.

Trying laughing at the situation and see what you think then.

I doubt I'd end the friendship but would probably struggle to hide it if they'd really got to me with a comment even if it was unintentional, but at the end of the day the people in our lives are important, its not worth ending a good friendship over something that may prove to be not as big as issue as its seen by one person.

It really depends on the situation. Everyone is entitled to their opinion so the abortion thing might not cause me to end the friendship but the racist comment would.

I don't think so I would just make them aware of my views on the subject and why but if they could not accept what I was saying I would feel that ending the friendship would be better for the both of us.

"unload the schmuck." heavily, it rather is my spouse's "relationship advice" each time somebody asks her opinion. the assumption is while you're asking different persons approximately your relationship that's probably no longer making you happy. we've been married seven years so i need to be keeping off schmuck-like inclinations, heh.

Pro life is a choice. I'd maintain the friendship.

Racism is a different matter. I don't care what color I am or what color my friend is. Racism has no place in my life. Period.

True friends give opions which are just mirrors of yourself..
and it is very difficult to digest humble pie.... a man worth his salt will accept the opionions and act upon it instead of ending the relationship ...

it's easy to end an internet friendship solely because both of you are anonymous. chances are one out of a thousand if ever you will meet him/her. as for me i wouldn't. people will say negative stuff and there's nothing i can do

hmmmm.....I don't know....I guess it would depend on a number of factors...such as the context the remark was made, who it was made to and why....

I don't think their opinion being different would do that unless that opinion was being maliciously applied...I enjoy having friends with differing opinions...makes for variety and makes me think...I might not always agree, but I at least learn another point of view...
