I have a lap top and desk PC connected with a cross over lan cable, the lap top connects to the internet via Wi-Fi on the pcmcia port. I have gone through wizard 100 times, says all is fine, however they won't talk to each other. They did talk once, quit, and never got it to go again, Any ideas appreciated

Have you got the firewalls set to allow them to see each other? Are the IP addresses on the LAN side set to similar addresses for example Laptop 192.168.0.1 (it needs to be that IP as Windows insists) PC either DHCP or 192.168.0.x. x being any number from 2 to 254.

I'm having problems with the cross-over cable.

Why not put a wifi card in the desktop and have a wireless router do all the configuration for you?

That way you will know if it's your configurations or the cryptic settings that are causing the problem.

make sure they are on the same subnet if using TCP/IP, you should also be a memeber of the same workgroup if you want to use windows browsing. Also make sure you don't have a firewall on either system blocking you. if so disable them and try it

Well in order for this to work ,one machine has to be a client and another has to be a server.

Maybe if you posted the OSes involved we could help you.

Verify they have IP addresses bound to their NIC interfaces.
