Should marriage laws vary from state to state, like cell phone service? Or should they be consistent, like all other kinds of contract law?

Consistency is always a welcomed connivance.

I personally think the marriage laws ought to be revamped entirely and should include specifics of how the marriage will divide property and care for any children that are a result of the contract. I also advocate a renewable five year contract... such that an un-renewed contract officially becomes the equivalent to a divorce...

Unfortunately, contract law varies from state to state as well. I think that a lot more things should be consistent state to state including marriage laws.

The laws do vary state to state just like laws of consent. In some state girl as young as 12 gaive have sex without anyone being charged for rape.

Marriage is a religious ceremony between a man and a woman.

The government should get out of that business and get back to things like contract law.

Civil unions for everyone!

they should be consistent. it like saying in one state you could get away with murder then the other- it shouldnt be like that. even if the law has to do with drinking- smoking or anything like that- if we are supposed to be the United States- then why have different laws which make us different

Consistent. It'll make things alot easier and understandable for us Americans. Like when we visit a different state and they have all these weird things you have to follow. Who cares.

it should be consistent, especially since most married couples engage in inter-state commerce of some form.
