By Rule 7.05A, it's a home run if the umpire decides that the ball would have left the park had the hat, glove, or whatever, not been thrown. If he feels that the ball would have stayed in the park, then the batter is awarded three bases.

I would think so. You can catch the ball with your hand, and what if the fielder is backpeddling and falls while catching the ball on his stomach(as in a football pass)? That is still consider an out as the ball did not touch the ground even though a part of his uniform was involved in the catch. I am only speaking out of common sense and not by the rulebook. But, then again it is illegal for outfielders to use a 1st base mitt.Hmmm???

NO ! You may not touch the ball with any thing detached from its proper place. Unless you can catch the ball in your hat while it's still on your head the batter would be awarded three bases unless the umpire determines it would have been a home run any way.I saw a game once where the catcher scooped up a rolling ball on the infield and the ump awarded the base runners 2 bases each allowing one run to score ! I saw Madonna catch a ball in her hat in a movie and it's bugged me ever since.

No. You may only make a catch with your bare hand or glove. If you catch the ball with your hat or throw part of your uniform to stop the ball the runners advance a base.

No, it is only an out if you catch the ball with your glove, bare hand, or any part of your body. You cannot use part of the uniform.

No, and you can't throw your glove or any other eqipment at it either or else it is an automatic triple even if it is any infield grounder or a liner in the gap.

That is a really good question. I am not positive, but I would think that it would be ok to stop a HR with your hat.
I CHANGE MY ANSWER: no, it would be interference and would probably result in a homerun or at very best a grounds rule double.

well, im pretty sure it is not allowed
the person is either just given the homerun, or, depending on the umpire, might be given a ground-roll double
although i am not sure... :(
