The Universe is the sum total of everything.
According to theory there was nothing but the big cosmic egg, prior to the formation of the universe. When the cosmic egg exploded it would have destroyed anything that had existed before hand. But, it has always been assumed that there was nothing. The Universe has been expanding since the moment of the big bang; since that happened at finite point in time and since the speed of light is a limit that means that our universe has a limit, an edge to it.
All the stars, galaxies, and other things that you see in the night sky are parts of the universe. Our own part is; the planet Earth, 3rd in the Sol solar system; situated in the Orion Arm of the Milky Way Galaxy. Currently we are on a collision course with our nearest neighbor, the Andromeda Galaxy, but that won’t happen for some 300 billion years. The Greater and Lesser Mallagenic Clouds are their own independent cluster of stars considered to be part of the local galactic group.
All further definition of our point in the Universe is useless, since no one could leave the boundaries of known space in billions of years. It may not even matter since, due to dark matter and dark energy, the universe is steadily increasing in its rate of expansion; the rest of the Universe is running away from each other.
After the big bang the expansion of the Universe was somewhere close to the speed of light, so when we check the speed of moving galaxies in space we can calculate how far they have traveled and so the age of the Universe. But, there is a problem with the Universe. When scientists measure the weight of the universe they come up far short. For some reason we can’t see most of the energy and most of the matter in the universe. This unknown dark matter and dark energy were a theory to explain it, but a pretty poor one; until just recently when observations finally discovered dark matter. We don’t know what it is, but instead of slowing down the speed of expansion of the Universe is continuing to increase.
If the big bang gave the objects in the Universe one big push then by simple friction against itself, and the effects of gravity the speed of those objects should be slowing. But, the opposite is happening, the speed is increasing. Something is continuing to add energy to push the Universe further out; this can only be explained by and unseen energy; called dark energy.
The existence of other dimensions of space time was first postulated by Einstein to be at least 11, but current string theory sets the minimum limit over 20. A dimension is a way that space time has to measure or act on a body. We know the standard dimensions of length, width, and depth, and we consider time to be the fourth dimension. We have no idea what the higher dimensions are, but it is suspected that gravity might come from a higher dimension. That would explain why we can’t figure anything out about gravity. We don’t know how it is made, how it is carried or what carries it, we only know that it exists.
The dimensions would have to exist in the same space time that we live in. It is possible that there are live forms that could live in the higher dimensions that we don’t see or even know about. It would be probable that our own bodies have an extension into the higher dimensions; could this be our souls? We have no way to determine. If you lived in a 2D world then a rectangle would be an enclosed space with no exit. But a 3D creature could pass right through the rectangle from above. To us poor 2D creatures we would see nothing then suddenly something strange would appear. We would see only a small fraction of it that keeps changing as it moves through our dimension. The same would happen with higher dimensions. If we could figure out how to move in those higher dimensions then we could travel use that to travel a huge distance in a short time by going over the obstacle of the longer distance. Just as the 3D creature did when it passed through the 2D creature’s supposedly sealed rectangular room.
If there are more than 4 dimensions, much more, then it is possible and indeed probably that there is a lot of something that exists there. We would have no idea of what it could be and thanks to our limit of 4D understanding we would have trouble understanding what it was if we even saw it.
As to other universes, it seems the creation of our own would have destroyed any previous universe. Or maybe the edge of our expanding universe is destroying the previous universe as it moves outward. We have no way of knowing.
There is a theory of time and probability that when a decision is made all forms of that decision are expressed. So there is a time line where you died in a car crash with your parents, another where you grand parents never even met and you don’t exist and an infinite number of other dimensions. If you come to an intersection of a road then you can go right, left, or straight. Which ever direction you chose sets your time line; that’s the decision. Left could be a world where Hitler won WW2, right could be a world where the dinosaurs were never killed off by an asteroid collision so they still rule the universe. Straight ahead is into the unknown future. With and infinite number of possibilities there are an infinite number of creatures and things that would exist. Each time line would have its own universe thus creating an infinite number of universes.
We can’t enter or even explore those other possible timelines until we develop time travel. Time travel is possible according to people like Steven Hawking. It requires going so close to a rotating black hole that you could pass through the warped space time. But, without gravity control that would crush use to a long string of fine powder. So time travel may be a real theory, but it may not be possible. If it is possible then would the time travelers be limited to their own time line.
If you went back in time and killed your grandfather; the grandfather paradox; then you would never have been born. So what happens when you return? Did events conspire to make sure you couldn’t kill your grandfather or do you come back to a world where you never existed? Does that mean you established a new time line or did your time line work to keep itself constant by not letting you kill your grandfather? We can’t answer these questions, we can only think about them.
The universe, as we know it, has a finite, but expanding limit. It contains all that we know, and it is larger and has more stuff in it than we can see, detect or possibly imagine. If alternate time lines are possible then there could be other universes with all possible decisions made; an infinite number of these universes. But as far as we know there is only one universe. We can’t travel back in time, currently. We can’t travel beyond the edge of the universe to see if there is anything there, and we can’t travel into an alternate time line to see what exists there or even if they are there. We can’t imagine what is in the higher dimensions so we can’t understand that either and due to the limitation of our brains we can’t understand those things.

The Universe is a huge wide-open space that holds everything from the smallest particle to the biggest galaxy. No one knows just how big the Universe is. Astronomers try to measure it all the time. They use a special instrument called a spectroscope to tell whether an object is moving away from Earth or toward Earth. Based on the information from this instrument, scientists have learned that the Universe is still growing outward in every direction.
Scientists believe that about 13.7 billion years ago, a powerful explosion called the Big Bang happened. This powerful explosion set the Universe into motion and this motion continues today. Scientists are not yet sure if the motion will stop, change direction, or keep going forever.
Our own galaxy is the milky way:
The Milky Way is the galaxy where the Solar System (and Earth) is located. It is a barred spiral galaxy of a Local Group of galaxies within the Virgo Supercluster. The main disk of the galaxy is about 80,000 to 100,000 light-years in diameter, about 250,000 to 300,000 light-years in circumference, and outside the Galactic core, about 2,300–2,600 light-years in thickness.[ The galaxy is estimated to contain 200[6] billion stars but this number may be as high as 400 billion[7] if small-mass stars predominate. As a guide to the relative physical scale of the Milky Way, if the galaxy were reduced to 130 km (80 mi) in diameter, the solar system would be a mere 2 mm (0.08 inches) in width. The Galactic Halo extends outward, but is limited in size by the orbits of the two Milky Way satellites, the Large and the Small Magellanic Clouds, whose perigalacticon is at ~180,000 light-years.[8] New discoveries indicate that the disk extends much farther than previously thought.
The term "milky" originates from the hazy band of white light appearing across the celestial sphere visible from Earth, which comprises stars and other material lying within the galactic plane. The galaxy appears brightest in the direction of the constellation of Sagittarius, towards the galactic center. Relative to the celestial equator, the Milky Way passes as far north as the constellation of Cassiopeia and as far south as the constellation of Crux, indicating the high inclination of Earth's equatorial plane and the plane of the ecliptic relative to the galactic plane. The fact that the Milky Way divides the night sky into two roughly equal hemispheres indicates that the Solar System lies close to the galactic plane. The Milky Way's visual absolute magnitude is −20.9.[3]
The Milky Way is but one of billions of galaxies in the observable universe (between 1×1010 and 8×1010). The Greek philosopher Democritus (450 BC–370 BC) was the first known person to claim that the Milky Way consists of distant stars.

A universe is everything there is. You can't get outside the universe to see what it looks like, sorry. :( We don't see any different universes, but there are other galaxies and dimensions. Dimensions are sort of like universes-is that what you're talking about? Scientists have found 11 so far.
We see other galaxies with a telescope. Galaxies are just collections of stars and possibly their planets. They're usually anywhere from hundreds of thousands to millions of light years across-compare that to the universe, which is somewhere between 10 and 18 billion light years across (according to the most recent and credible estimates). Some people say it goes on forever and it very well might, but according to the most popular/credible scientific theories if you go faster than the speed of light for a long time, you will eventually get to the end of the universe-this is like a cat going at 5 mph with a 10 mile headstart. The dog comes up and goes at 10 mph. He'll catch up to the cat because he's going faster, but it'll take him awhile. You'd be the dog.
Hope this helps on your quest for information. :)

wow, are you serious? holy cr*p, i was doing the exact same thing last night. i was thinking about the big bang theory, how the universe erupted from this super dense atom. but then i started to wonder, well how the hell did the atom get there? and like how can something start out of nothing? it makes no sense. and if the universe is not infinite, where does it end? does it have a barrier and what is the barrier and what does the barrier keep out? and if it is infinite than its equally mindboggling on how something could go on forever - how is it possible? but i know exactly what you mean and i can't seem to get it out of my head! i don't really have an idea about how this all started, because everything seems impossible. i am not religious, but say there was a "force" beyond all this. then where did that force come from? that is actually one main reason that i am not religious. i think existence is confusing enough and i think adding a god into all that just makes it harder to comprehend. why are we here? honestly, it is so strange and i have no clue. i do not think we will ever find out but you never know. when you really think about the universe, nothing seems to make sense anymore. how are you supposed to look at things from the big picture when we have no clue what the big picture is?

The universe is a closed dynamic value evolution and replication system. All forms move from dense matter to ethereal essence via energy displacement governed by principles of intelligence that focus the will of awareness into a system of value reproduction and value evolution. The state of Godhood and total awareness is at the end of the evolutionary cycle of the universe and the state of density and sleep is at the beginning of the cycle of creation.
Creation is the qualities or quality of Godhood focused by the will of divine principle into a collection of assembling mental units of thought. This process continues to disassemble and reassemble mental units of thought for the purpose of achieving advanced orders of thinking that will result in evolving the sleeping dense matter to a point where it will cross barriers separating dimensions of creation until all creation is transformed into the absolute state of God.
Our biggest hang-up in civilization is that we insist on separating the ideas of GOD and EVOLUTION. Our sciences will not do us true justice until it drops this separation, and our religions will not serve the truth until they drop it.
